"There's a fine line between the Method actor and the schizophrenic."- Nicolas Cage
Many people believe that living the life of a celebrity is very easy. You have to do nothing but spend money, live lavishly and enjoy everything, but their life actually is much more than that. They have to do real hard work when they have to portray a character on-screen.
Some actors don't consider their role in a movie just as a way of earning a paycheck, they consider it as their life itself. These actors take their roles so far that people begin to call them as insane and also appreciate them like they appreciate no one.
The new generation of thespians has taken the acting game to the next level with their sincere efforts and dedication. So, to appreciate these highly dedicated actors, we have made a list of thespians who took acting to the next level.
It is without a doubt that Nicolas Cage is one of the most respected and talented actors in the Hollywood industry. He has done several challenging roles throughout his career. One of them was in the 1984 drama, 'Birdy'. He played the role of a Vietnam veteran, Al Columbato. Cage lost 15 pounds and removed his four teeth and kept bandages on his face for eight weeks.
What would happen if you are given two diet cokes, egg whites and a piece of chicken every day for three months? I have an answer; you will become Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey) of Dallas Buyers Club by looks. The actor lost nearly 50 pounds and even admitted that it affected his eyesight. In an interview with Radio Times, the actor said, "As soon as I hit 143lb [10 stone 3lb], I started losing my eyesight."
Adding realism to a scene can get fatal sometimes. During the shooting of a scene in Rocky IV, Sylvester asked Dolph Lundgren to knock him out. It was not at all the wisest decision made by Sylvester as Lundgren's hit had a very hard impact on his chest. Later that night, Sylvester's blood pressure rose up to 260, and he was kept in intensive care unit for five days.
Let me tell you his first profession is rapping not acting and still, this man went crazy for doing the role of a cancer patient in the movie, 'All Things Fall Apart'. 50 Cent lost nearly 54 pounds for portraying Deon. He himself wrote the screenplay and produced the film. In an interview about the movie, 50 said, "You don't have to make everything personal, but that project was."
It is tough for me to understand why people don't appreciate the role of Johnny Depp in 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas'. Depp played the role of Hunter Thompson's alter ego and blew millions of his money & acted as a mule.
This list can not be completed without Heath Ledger's legendary portrayal of Joker. Heath locked himself in a hotel room for a month to prepare and rehearse for the character. The creation of icon which Joker is today took more than that. He even slept for only two hours for portraying his first and last comic book villain. He won numerous awards including 'The Academy Award posthumously'.
Robert De Niro is regarded one of the best and iconic actors in Hollywood. For playing the role of a boxer in the movie, Raging Bull, Robert nearly gained 60 pounds. The actor even suffered from respiratory problems due to the excessive weight and that even stopped the shooting for some time. He also won 'The Academy Award for Best Actor' portraying Jake LaMotta.
In almost every film in his career, Daniel Day-Lewis has used method acting. Many fans all around were teary-eyed when they heard that the legendary actor is retiring. He is also the only actor to win 'The Academy Award' three times in the 'Best Actor' category. He dedicated himself towards acting like no other superstar. From breaking ribs in 'My Left Foot' to leaving alone for sixth months for the preparation of 'The Last of the Mohicans', Daniel has dedicated his whole life to acting.
Another Oscar-winning performance in the list but this time the actor is Eddie Redmayne. This 35-year-old actor played the role of Stephan Hawking in the movie, The Theory of Everything. The actor spent nearly four months in meeting with the ALS patients in London. He even had to train his body like a dancer because he needed flexibility for sitting in the wheelchair just like Hawking.
Another Joker in the list. I guess Joker is the most formidable villain to play. The role of clown prince cannot be taken lightly, and that is something which was done by Jared. He sent his cast members with some creepy gifts, a bag of bullets to Will Smith and a rat to Margot Robbie.
Adrien starved himself for portraying the character of a Nazi victim in Polanski film, The Pianist. He lost nearly 14 kg (31 lbs) by eating two boiled eggs, green tea, a little chicken, and a small piece of fish with steamed vegetables. Adrien also got the credit for his sacrifices as he became the youngest actor ever to win The Academy Award for Best Actor. He was 29 years old when he won the award.
Christian Bale is known for transforming himself. In the movie, The Machinist, Bale took the transformation to another level. He nearly lost 60 pounds for playing the character of Trevor Reznik.
Jim Carrey played the role of Andy Kaufman in the biopic, 'Man on the Moon'. The movie is truly his best, but it required a lot of hard work for making it. He stopped responding to people who did not call him by the name of Andy or his alter ego, Tony Clifton.
LaBeouf is known for playing serious roles, and he did the same thing in the movie, Fury where he played a supporting actor. LaBeouf pulled his teeth out and even cut his face with a knife.
In 2008, Joaquin announced that he is quitting acting to pursue a career as a rapper in the hip-hop. Later in 2010, all his public appearances and bizarre behaviour resulted in his documentary which was directed by Casey Affleck. The quitting acting was a hoax because since then the actor has returned to act in other films also.
