Guess what's common between Michael Jordon, Sachin Tendulkar, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Roger Federer and Michael Schumacher? Apart from their meteoric rise to their pomp in the 90's, all of them are synonymous with their respective sport.
While all of them are somewhat replaceable, i.e. their records can be broken, there's one man who stands invincible and is the king of kings when it comes to a pay per view (PPV) numbers. Floyd Mayweather, otherwise known as Floyd 'Money' Mayweather has stood tall in the boxing ring for 20 years and boasts an incredible record of 49 – 0. Something on which Conor McGregor is licking his lips at.
'The Notorious' Conor McGregor At 28, is Mr UFC. He is the highest paid UFC athlete along with being Champion in 3 different weight classes. But for now, he has put his UFC career on hold as on August 26, he takes on Money Mayweather for the billion dollar boxing match.
49 wins, 20 years, five different weight classes, one Champion, ZERO defeats – that's Floyd 'Money' Mayweather for you. He's broken PPV records previously set and then broke his own PPV records. His fights had a worldwide audience of 500 million. According to him, there's no one, literally no one who can defeat him. Or is there?
At 28, 'The Notorious' Conor McGregor is a multi-division champion, UFC's highest paid athlete, holds the highest PPV numbers and is perhaps the best trash talker of our generation, he's like Floyd Mayweather of the 21st century just with a less stellar record. Now he prepares to step into the boxing ring for the first time and who'll he be taking on? You bet.
In September 2015, Floyd Mayweather took on Manny Pacquiao for what was his alleged final fight before he hangs his boxing gloves. The PPV had a worldwide audience of 500 million, making $500 million dollars in revenue where each boxer made around $80 million.
Mayweather said time and time again that he has retired and he won't be coming back to the boxing ring following his win against Pacquiao but that was soon to change.
It all started when McGregor appeared on the Connon O'Brien Show and upon being asked whether he'll like to fight Floyd Mayweather, he replied "If you're asking would I like to fight Floyd Mayweather - I mean, who would not like to dance around the ring for $180 million?". Since then the taunting begin.
McGregor was always adamant he wanna fight Mayweather but he took it one step further when he offered Mayweather $50 million for a potential bout.
Mayweather was the one this time to fire the shots. He posted a mock-up poster of the fight between him and McGregor.
McGregor claims that only reason the fight isn't happening is because "He's running around the Showtime offices begging for those executives to come up with $100 million cash for me, to fight me. So as soon as he gets my money, we can fight."
McGregor obtains his boxing license and rumors starts flying about a potential fight.
Mayweather offers McGregor the sum and questions his PPV numbers. While talking to ESPN, he said "My number was a guaranteed $100 million, that was my number. We're the 'A' side and I don't really know how much money Conor McGregor has made. I'm pretty sure he hasn't even made $10 million in an MMA bout.
"But we are willing to give him $15 million and then we can talk about splitting the percentage, the back end percentage on pay-per-view. But of course, we're the 'A' side. How can a guy talk about $20 or $30 million if he's never made $8 or $9 million?"
Conor McGregor didn't shy away from Mayweather's challenge and he posted this picture of him, standing tall over Mayweather and celebrating his win.
Following the sparring between the two, Mayweather comes out and says he's officially out of retirement and is ready to face McGregor in a boxing ring.
In an interview with Stephen A Smith, Mayweather said, "As soon as they say let's sign on the dotted line, then it's time to go to training camp."
The picture is quoted as "I don't need glasses I just like how they look on my face even tho they tilt on me cos of my banged up nose and ears I still feel like I look good happy Thursday everyone how's that 75milli make your stomach feel? It's actually 100+ milli if we go by the non-conservative numbers the fight will actually do and that's not including my endorsements and business ventures. 28 years of age. Fresh cunt. Doubt me now!''
He quotes the picture as "Solid work today. Sign your end Floyd or you are just a mouth."
Mayweather posted a short video making the official announcement.
McGregor posted the image with the caption "THE FIGHT IS ON"
