American actor Anthony Rapp created a huge uproar when he told BuzzFeed that Kevin Spacey tried making sexual advances towards him when he was a minor in 1986. The 46-year-old said that Spacey had invited him to a party when he was 14 and seemed drunk when the alleged incident happened. He said Spacey befriended him while they both performed on Broadway shows about three decades ago and spoke publicly about the incident.Responding to the accusation, Spacey put out a public statement apologizing the actor about the whole episode. He wrote: "This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life... I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose to now live as a gay man."And now, in wake of the whole scandal, reports are floating around that Netflix has decided to cut short the run of House Of Cards, a highly-acclaimed series with Spacey in the lead.
A recent report by Independent says that the upcoming season of the show will be it's last.
The sixth season of the series is due for a premier next year and it's shooting is currently going on.
The decision to pull the plug on the series has come in 12-hours within Spacey's public statement and we wonder if controversy has anything to do with it.
Many have argued that the sixth season was anyway supposed to be the concluding season but the announcement suggests that outside events may have influenced the decision to bring Netflix’s flagship series to an end, or at least to announce its conclusion today.
Yes, there's one. But it doesn't deal with the ending of the series. In a response to the allegations against Spacey, Netflix and Media Rights Capital released a joint statement: “Media Rights Capital and Netflix are deeply troubled by last night’s news concerning Kevin Spacey. In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time.”
The news was broken by The Hollywood Reporter which added that this was always going to be the final season of the show before allegations against Spacey were made public.
The other part of Spacey's statement said that he was “beyond horrified” by the story. “I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behaviour, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years,” Spacey said.
Spacey then went on to confirm one of Hollywood's worst kept secrets, that he is, in fact, gay. "This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life," he continued.
