Widely known for playing the title character in the 'Spider-Man' film trilogy, Tobey Maguire began his film career in the late 1980s in ‘The Wizard’. Tobey is one of the most thought-provoking actors who has delivered nuanced, engaging performances that left audiences spellbound - be it the disaffected young suburbanite in ‘The Ice Storm’ or a geek turned superhero in ‘Spider-Man’. Born as Tobias Vincent Maguire to Wendy Brown and Vincent Maguire on June 27, 1975, in California, Tobey’s parents married after his birth and separated when he was two years of age. Part Austrian and part Puerto Rican, Maguire wanted to enroll his name in a home economics class as a sixth grader as he wanted to become a chef. But he changed his mind when his mother, once an aspiring actress herself, encouraged Tobey and offered him $100 to take a drama class instead. Tobey dropped out of school. But today, Tobey Maguire is one of the most successful actors in Hollywood.
Tobey Maguire had a very similar childhood to his most talked about character Peter Parker from the 'Spider-Man' trilogy. Tobey’s parents split when he was very young and he spent much of his childhood moving from one town to another town, living with each parent and their relatives just like Peter Parker in Spider Man. Also, Tobey like his character Peter Parker, wasn’t very popular in high school and again like Peter Parker, Tobey’s relatives were also not big on money.
In the 2001 movie ‘Cats & Dogs’, Tobey Maguire was the voice of Lou the Beagle and saves the world from cats. In 'Spider-Man', Maguire was bitten by a radioactive spider that gave him superhuman abilities. In the movie ‘Seabiscuit’, Tobey played the role of a jockey Red Pollard who rode a winning horse to victory. Interesting!
“I started working around eight grade. I remember doing a Doritos commercial where there were four days in a row of eating them, and I will tell you, I have not eaten many Doritos since.”
Both Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio started out young and found themselves auditioning for same roles. They became friends and started recommending each other in their movies and TV shows. Even after so many years the two good friends still turn to each other whenever they find themselves in need of some advice.“Every project we do, we talk about,” Leonardo said in an interview about Tobey. “Every single choice I've made, I've talked to Tobey about and vice versa. We've had endless conversations about certain projects and argued with one another and supported one another along the way.”
DiCaprio was cast in a TV series based on the film ‘Parenthood’ and Tobey on Leonardo’s recommendation landed a guest role in the same. Tobey played one of Leonardo’s friends in the movie ‘This Boy’s Life’ and then they were seen together again in the movie ‘Don’s Plum’ followed by ‘The Great Gatsby’.
Tobey while steadily working his way to top, was also involved in the hard-partying lifestyle. In 1995, he requested director Allan Moyle to release him from the part in the film ‘Empire Records’ and so all his scenes were deleted. Tobey then sought help for a drinking problem from Alcoholics Anonymous and has been sober ever since.
Tobey has been vegetarian since 1992 and became a vegan in 2009. He was declared as World’s Sexiest Vegetarian in 2002 by PETA.
While shooting for the movie ‘Seabiscuit’ at Universal Studios, Maguire met jewellery designer Jennifer Meyer in 2003 and got engaged in April 2006. They married in 2007, a few months after the birth of their daughter Ruby Sweetheart Maguire and the couple also has a son, Otis Tobias Maguire. The couple announced their separation in 2016, nine years after their marriage.
Tobey has been tutored by poker professional Daniel Negreanu and he can be seen on ESPN’s coverage of 2005, 2006 and 2007 World Series Poker Main Event Championship. On October 27, 2004, he won the Phil Hellmuth Poker Invitational tournament at the Hollywood Park Casino in Los Angeles, taking the first prize of $95,480.
Tobey after ‘Seabiscuit’ was suffering from severe back pains and almost couldn’t do 'Spider-Man 2'. Jake Gyllenhaal was in talks to replace Maguire and had already begun preparation.
One of Maguire’s paternal great-grandfathers was Austrian and one of his paternal great-grandmothers was Puerto Rican. Tobey’s other ancestors were English, Irish, Danish, French, and German.
Maguire has four half-brothers, two on his father’s side, Vincent Jr. and Timothy and two on his mother’s side - Jopaul Van Epp and Weston Epp.Both Jopaul and Weston made a cameo appearance as boys wearing masks in the train scene in ‘Spider-Man 2’.
“I've been mistaken for so many different actors, it's just wild. I've gotten Jake Gyllenhaal a few times, like, 'Loved you in Brokeback Mountain (2005)!’”
Tobey became a producer with film ‘25th Hour’ in 2002. His other production credits include ‘Whatever We Do’ and ‘Seabiscuit’.
By 2011, Tobey had worked as a voice actor for four video games including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Besides being an actor, producer, poker player Maguire has other interests that keep him occupied and happy. He enjoys playing chess, yoga and cooking. Remember, we told you Tobey aspired to be a chef.
Tobey along with his co-star Willem Dafoe appeared on an Australian late-night variety show during the Australian release period of 'Spider-Man' in 2002. During this interview, when asked if he was a fan of the comic book, Maguire claimed that he had never touched a Spider-Man comic book before and that he never wanted to read them. Awh!
