Before you sit down to judge a person for his/her looks or temperament the next time, pause for a moment and try to understand their real struggles. If you cannot empathize with them, at least, refrain from passing lewd remarks or cruel comments.Today, I would like to draw your attention to a daring woman who has defied all odds and taken the road less trodden. She has overcome her fear of being judged and abused and is now leading her life on her own terms.Alma Torres,24, from New York has come out of the nutshell, ignoring all the brutal comments and trolls that were shoved in her face for having an excess facial hair; a beard, to be more precise. She is an inspiration for all those who try to live each day based on futile societal norms.
According to The Sun, Alma has been suffering from PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) since eight years now.
This image explains what is PCOS and its symptoms.
It is said that it started when she was 16.
Besides excess facial hair growth, Alma also suffers from infertility, ovary pains, cramps, and weight gain, which are other prominent symptoms of PCOS.
She took to shaving, plucking, and tweezing to get rid of her facial hair for a long time.
She finally decided to stop feeling sorry for herself and embrace the reality.
She decided to let her natural self take over and stopped shaving.
According to reports, when Alma asked her boyfriend, Taylor, if he would mind seeing her in a beard, he replied, "It’s just hair. That’s normal."He finds her beautiful the way she is and doesn't let physical imperfections come in the way of love. “It’s what is inside that matters. It’s something that’s natural and there’s nothing wrong with that,” says Taylor.
Some insensitive souls have called her "ugly" and suggested that she should kill herself. "People have told me ‘go wax your ugly a**’ and have called me cancer," adds Alma. She reveals that people generally don't comment in person but they do stare at her and try to click her picture. However, she does get trolled brutally on the internet.
This bold woman has stopped letting trolls and comments get to her and finds them emerging out of their own insecurities.
Alma mentions how her beard has made her a better person and added confidence to her personality. She wants to encourage other PCOS patients to feel the same and not let bogged down by cruel comments. She wants to be a role model for women who suffer from such diseases like PCOS. “I know how other women feel and I just want them to know that I’m there for them and that you can be who you are and you can be beautiful,” says Alma.
Infertility is one of the side effects of PCOS but this couple hasn't lost hope. They are fighting the condition together and are hoping to be blessed with a "miracle" baby some day.
Alma has a message for all the PCOS patients, "I want to tell other PCOS sufferers that this is who you are but if you want to change it then its fine but if you feel comfortable then don’t change."She adds, “I don’t want to change. Maybe here and there I will but I’m happy with the way I am.”
